Spring is finally here in Atlanta, and the fun is blooming at the Center for Puppetry Arts! We’ve got a favorite Family Series show on stage, a beloved documentary, exciting educational programs and more. Check out everything on our calendar this April and make your plans to come visit!
On stage all month: Dr. Seuss's The Cat in the Hat. “It is fun to have fun, but you have to know how!” says the Cat in the tall red and white hat. All of your favorite moments from the classic Dr. Seuss tale come to life on stage. This show is presented in the Mainstage Theater, and the Create-A-Puppet Workshop is the Cat in the Hat Shadow Puppet.
In the Worlds of Puppetry Museum all month: Guided tours of the museum take place Tuesday-Friday at 1 pm, Saturday at 11 am. Guided tours of the Jim Henson Collection take place Tuesday-Friday at 3 pm, Saturday and Sunday at 1 pm. Behind-the-scenes tours take place Saturdays and Sundays at 3 pm.
Now open in the Special Exhibit Gallery: Indian Puppets: The Great Stories and Dancing Dolls! Indian Puppets celebrate the cultural range of India by exploring the diversity of puppetry techniques and genres across the subcontinent. Learn how puppetry has been used in India for over a millennium as an important storytelling tool, while seeing both traditional and contemporary pieces. This special exhibit is included with Museum admission.
Apr. 3: Toddler Tuesday. This interactive museum program is designed for ages 2-4, and includes special games, dancing and story time!
Apr. 3: National Fun Day! You know what’s a fun way to spend this day? A visit to the Center for Puppetry Arts!
Apr. 8: Dr. Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat—A sensory-friendly performance. Performance alterations include theater lights dimmed down but not out, consistent sound levels and lower volume of show soundtrack, freedom for children to talk and to leave their seat if necessary, a quiet zone in the lobby, and permission to bring quiet, contained snacks and beverages. Create-A-Puppet Workshop classrooms will be brighter, quieter, and feature less-messy puppet building materials and slightly simplified puppet designs. This modified programming also extends to include our expanded Museum, where lighting will be adjusted and specialized educational activities (such as touch tables and guided storytelling) will be integrated. Fidget toys and sound-reducing headphones will also be available. Learn more about our ASD programming here.
Apr. 14: I Am Big Bird. Films are included with paid Museum admission (Members get in free, as always). Reservations are recommend.
Apr. 15: The Cat in the Hat Sunday Funday. Celebrate Sunday Funday with Dr. Seuss's The Cat in the Hat! We'll have face painting, balloon animals and celebratory cupcakes to snack on (while supplies last). Festivities are included at no extra charge with your paid admission to The Cat in the Hat or Worlds of Puppetry Museum. Show times at 1 pm and 3 pm.
