Production Department

Summary

The Center for Puppetry Arts is accepting resumes for a Props Master for an upcoming new work production. This is a temporary project hire position. The Props Master is responsible for construction, engineering, purchase, procurement and management of all props and set dressing needs for the production. Responsibilities include management of the props list and budget. Also, coordinating needs with the scenic shop, puppet shop, and any over hire crew provided. The Props Master will collaborate with the artistic and technical staff to achieve the director and designers’ artistic vision.

  • Planning and R&D Phase complete – shop plans due: 9/23/2022
  • Fabrication & Prep Phase complete – Props and set dressing due: 1/20/2023
  • Load-in Prep: 1/23 – 27/2023
  • Change Over: 1/29-2/1/2023
  • Rehearsal: 1/31-2/12/2023
  • Tech / Dress Rehearsal: 2/14-21/2023
  • Opening: 2/22/2023

Primary Responsibilities

  • Work with the director, puppet designer, and scenic designer to understand and support the artistic vision of the show
  • Engineering and construction of specialty props, insuring the timely delivery of all props elements
  • Procurement (purchase, rental, etc.) of all props and set dressing that do not require construction
  • Construction of rehearsal props as needed
  • Manage the Props budget
  • Coordinate with Scene Shop and Puppet Shop for scheduling and space needs
  • Attend all production meetings, tech notes sessions
  • Attend rehearsals as needed
  • Maintain show documentation for props
  • Build drawings, research pictures or plans
  • Create and maintain props list
  • Update and archive props paperwork
  • Take and archive tech photos as it pertains to props
  • Comply with general safety practices and all safety regulations in relation to Production Department
  • Anticipate and advise on prop storage needs for post-production

Other Responsibilities: May be called upon to assist scenic or puppet shop crews if duties allow.

Desired Skills

  • Props construction in a variety of materials and construction techniques
  • Painting and finishes
  • Carving and sculpting foam and other media
  • Metalworking; especially welding, cold assembly, forming
  • Must be able to use standard shop equipment such as a table saw, band saw, drill press, jigsaw, grinder, etc.
  • Responsible budget management
  • Experience with electronic systems such as LEDs and Arduino is highly desirable
  • Woodworking, furniture, and house construction knowledge a plus
  • Self-motivated, organized and responsible
  • Team-oriented attitude with a passion for creative problem solving
  • Courteous and professional demeanor
  • Skills in crew management and scheduling
  • Healthy sense of humor required

Qualifications

  • 3-5 Years of professional props experience in a theatrical setting preferred
  • Available to work some nights, weekends
  • Must pass a background check
  • Must have transportation and ability to drive a cargo van

Physical Demands

  • Comfortable working on ladders (all spaces have dead-hung grids)
  • Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 25 pounds regularly
  • Vision Requirements: Color Vision and Depth Perception
  • Ability to hear well in noisy environment
  • Fine hand dexterity
  • Ability to stand, bend, crawl, squat, climb, kneel, push/pull

Employment Status

Contract, Hourly (nonexempt) position
Rate: $20+ per hour – Based on Experience
Non-remote
