Scenic Overhire Crew – Hourly

SUMMARY

The Center for Puppetry Arts is accepting resumes to fill its ever-growing list of scenic artists, craftsmen, and technicians for opportunities on an as-needed basis. Specific duties may range from general technical assistance to specific artistry projects. The expected duties are outlined by the Technical Director during the planning process to fill specific needs. Scene shop crew are encouraged to discuss their interest in upcoming projects.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities cover a variety of disciplines, including but not limited to the following:

  • Load-in, changeover, or strike of Center productions and events.
  • Moving scenery in or out of storage.
  • Repair and touch-up of all scenic elements.
  • Contributes to keeping workplaces tidy.
  • Assist with Center activities, as needed.

FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

The majority of Overhire calls will be loading shows in and out, and will require the following:

  • Three years of formal theatre education or professional experience.
  • Understanding of common theatre terms.
  • Comfortable working in a Theatre Scene Shop.
  • Confident installing or striking a range of scenic elements.
  • Troubleshooting and problem solving.
  • Use of ladders.
  • Willingness to adapt to different fabrication and installation processes.
  • Motivated and responsible.
  • No current nor significant disagreements with puppets.
  • Healthy sense of humor.
  • Team-oriented attitude.

ADDITIONAL SKILLS

Periodically, there may be opportunities for fabrication.  Any comfort or proficiencies with items on this list should be discussed with the Technical Director and will likely require a portfolio for review.

  • Woodworking (from scenic carpentry to furniture craft and everything in between)
  • Metalworking (welding, drilling, machining, etc)
  • Basic rigging (mostly utilizing ropes and pulleys, such as for curtains)
  • Carving (foam primarily)
  • Painting (Scenic artistry to faux finishing)
  • Crafting, sewing, dressing
  • Tetris-ing (Packing and storing efficiently)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Comfortable working on and moving ladders (all spaces have dead-hung grids)
  • Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds regularly
  • Ability to stand for long periods, squatting and kneeling

EMPLOYMENT STATUS

Part Time/As needed, Hourly (nonexempt)

Rate: $16+ per hour – Based on Experience

Non-remote
