JOB SUMMARY
The Center for Puppetry Arts is accepting resumes to expand its pool of scenic artists, craftsmen, and technicians for part-time, as-needed opportunities.
Duties may range from general technical assistance to specialized artistry projects. Specific responsibilities are assigned by the Technical Director during the planning process based on production needs. Scene Shop crew members are encouraged to express interest in upcoming projects.
Reports to the Technical Director and the Associate Technical Director.
DUTIES/
RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities span a variety of disciplines, including but not limited to:
- Load in, changeover, and strike of Center productions and events
- Moving scenery in and out of storage
- Repair and touch up of scenic elements
- Maintaining tidy and organized workspaces
- Assisting with other Center activities as needed
- Comfortable working on and moving ladders (all spaces have dead-hung grids)
- Ability to lift and carry at least 50 lbs. regularly
- Ability to stand for long periods, squat, and kneel
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES
Most over hire calls involve loading shows in and out and require:
- Three years of formal theatre education or professional experience
- Understanding of common theatre terminology
- Comfort working in a theatre scene shop
- Confidence installing and striking scenic elements
- Troubleshooting and problem solving skills
- Ability to use ladders safely
- Willingness to adapt to different fabrication and installation processes
- Motivated, responsible, and team oriented
- No current or significant disagreements with puppets
- A healthy sense of humor
Occasional opportunities may involve fabrication. Comfort or proficiency in any of the following should be discussed with the Technical Director and may require a portfolio:
- Woodworking (scenic carpentry to fine furniture craft)
- Metalworking (welding, drilling, machining, etc.)
- Basic rigging (primarily ropes and pulleys)
- Foam carving
- Scenic painting and faux finishing
- Crafting, sewing, and dressing
- Efficient packing and storage (“Tetris ing”)

Part-Time / As Needed
On-site (non-remote)
COMPENSATION
- Hourly, non-exempt
- Rate: $16.00+ per hour, based on experience
